Adjacent to the Cal State University Monterey Bay campus, this 176-unit (585-bed) student housing project entails three four-story buildings and 429 parking spaces on an eight-acre site. Whitson Engineers worked with a private development company to deliver the student housing on an accelerated schedule and supplied construction drawings and engineering support from the specific plan/entitlements phase through construction. Our land surveying team performed topographic mapping and construction staking.

To revitalize a neglected area of downtown, this mixed-use, urban-infill project provides low-income housing near community bus lines on a major transportation corridor. With 171 residential units, ranging from one- to four-bedroom configurations, the 5.9-acre project called for attractive, yet affordable, workforce housing located close to retail and commercial services. The apartments included outdoor community spaces, both garage and surface parking, and about 13,000-square-feet of street level commercial space. Whitson Engineers provided civil engineering design services for the apartments.

Built by the produce company on an old sugar mill property, the Spreckels Crossing employee residential housing complex consists of 100 two-bedroom, two-bathroom fully furnished units. The community provides safe, clean housing for farmworkers, an adaptive reuse of the site, and less traffic congestion as residents are transported by bus to and from their worksite. Our team supplied land surveying services for construction of the eight buildings, and we erected story poles at each building for inspection by the County of Monterey Planning Department to assist in expediting permit review. Civil engineering was provided on a fast-tracked schedule from planning and entitlements through construction drawings to help meet an important need in our community. The project timeline from concept, entitlement and construction was completed in less than 16 months.

Stevenson School is a world-renowned private school located on the Monterey Peninsula. For nearly two decades, Whitson Engineers has provided entitlement, civil design and land surveying services on over 50 projects on the school’s two campuses. The Barrows Commons (student and faculty dormitory) along with Faculty Houses 1 and 2 are among a couple of notable projects providing quality housing for the faculty and students at Stevenson School. The Barrow Commons is one out of seven dormitories built to support the Stevenson School community by providing a large common area for students and faculty to gather and bond together. The faculty housing projects include 2,000-square-foot duplex units designed to meet the standards of a passive building. The high-efficient housing projects are creative solutions assisting with the recruitment and retainment of teachers.

A joint venture of three local agricultural families to offer safe and affordable housing for seasonal farmworkers, this gated community includes six two-story apartment buildings with 75 units, two recreation rooms, basketball and volleyball courts, and a sports field. Our team provided land surveying and civil engineering services, construction support and construction staking. Since this four-acre flat site had no existing underground storm drain facilities, we designed a large onsite underground retention/detention chamber system, storm drain lift station to offset a shallow ditch for discharging runoff and an off-site public retention/detention chamber system, the first of its kind to be installed for Monterey County Public Works.
