Tanimura & Antle Farmworker Housing | Spreckels, California

Built by the produce company on an old sugar mill property, the Spreckels Crossing employee residential housing complex consists of 100 two-bedroom, two-bathroom fully furnished units. The community provides safe, clean housing for farmworkers, an adaptive reuse of the site, and less traffic congestion as residents are transported by bus to and from their worksite. Our team supplied land surveying services for construction of the eight buildings, and we erected story poles at each building for inspection by the County of Monterey Planning Department to assist in expediting the permit review process. Civil engineering was provided on a fast-tracked schedule from planning and entitlements through construction drawings to help meet an important need in our community. The project timeline from concept, entitlement and construction was completed in less than 16 months.

Whitson Engineers provided full civil engineering and land surveying services for the winery—known for sustainability and conservation programs—to construct a 68,000-square-foot wine barrel storage and aging cellar by designing their site improvements, which include site utilities, fire system, grading, drainage and a stormwater percolation pond.

Dole Salad Processing Facility | Monterey County, California

The largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world, Dole Food Company built a 287,000-square-foot agricultural processing facility in the Salinas Valley, known as “the Salad Bowl of the World.” Our land surveyors provided boundary resolution, topographic mapping and construction staking for this large project site. Our team of civil engineers prepared site improvement plans along with plans for the reconstruction of the U.S. Route 101 and the Camphora Gloria Road off-ramp. Whitson Engineers also provided civil engineering services for Dole’s cooling facility in Marina, California.

    Greenfield Organix | Greenfield, California

With the legalization of cannabis in California, this fast-growing cannabis processing company worked with the Whitson Engineers’ design team to prepare a vesting tentative map, final map and improvement plans for their five-acre site. The design included site-improvement plans for eight greenhouses and a 24,000-square-foot lab and dispensary along with a stormwater basin, utility infrastructure and off-site street improvements.

Boronda Villas Farmworker Housing | Salinas, California

A joint venture of three local agricultural families to offer safe and affordable housing for seasonal farmworkers, this gated community includes six two-story apartment buildings with 75 units, two recreation rooms, basketball and volleyball courts, and a sports field. Our team provided land surveying and civil engineering services, construction support and construction staking. Since this four-acre flat site had no existing underground storm drain facilities, we designed a large onsite underground retention/detention chamber system, storm drain lift station to offset a shallow ditch for discharging runoff and an off-site public retention/detention chamber system, the first of its kind to be installed for Monterey County Public Works.
