Internships

Internships

Each year we welcome student interns into Whitson Engineers to work right alongside our team of professionals. We provide a comfortable environment, a warm welcome, and caring mentors who take a genuine interest in our interns’ future success.

Those accepted into the intern program work on a variety of current projects with the project teams, drawing on skills learned at school and acquiring new skills to help complete projects. Assignments are based on an intern’s skills and interests, with their mentors committed to making the experience challenging and enjoyable while working on real world engineering solutions.

We welcome applications from students who have completed at least two years of a civil engineering or land-surveying curriculum and/or have related experience. Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D is desirable. Our interns are considered temporary, full-time employees.

Those who are interested in an internship may submit a resume and letter of inquiry at any time. The number of available positions depends on the firm’s current projects, and internships may be available throughout the year.

In their own words…

Whitson Engineers provides an enjoyable and energetic atmosphere that makes all the learning opportunities pleasant.  The entire staff is friendly and knowledgeable; I soon realized the skills each mentor taught me was going to last a life time.  I was excited to develop some project management skills by understanding the administration perspective of proposals, project contracts, cost estimates and submittals.

At Whitson Engineers you feel like you are part of the team at work and outside of work, from day one. Whether it’s playing a softball game, or having a learning lunch, they really know how to have fun and promote a healthy work-life balance and genuinely take care of their employees by providing great benefits…I can’t imagine a smarter, more dedicated, or fun group to work with. Your work culture is something every firm should strive towards.

I enjoyed working with civil engineers and land surveyors and benefitted from interacting with both types of professionals. Each person had a project that I could learn from and help with. They ranged from site planning and design, to storm water analysis and hydrology, to being outside and surveying. I loved working at Whitson Engineers, and I feel very grateful to have been an intern here this summer working and playing softball with a wonderful and welcoming group of people.

My internship at Whitson Engineers was a rewarding learning experience. I strengthened my engineering and Civil 3D skills and was able to apply what I learned towards my Senior Design Project while attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. There was always someone to answer my questions, and everyone was very open, friendly, and willing to help. I felt like part of the team from day one and enjoyed every minute of my internship.

It was such a unique experience to see a project from beginning to end. I believe that everything from working in the field to learning more about AutoCAD will give me great confidence as I enter into my last semester in school and eventually go on to enter the work force. I will treasure my summer at Whitson for years to come because of how much I learned and how genuinely nice and hardworking everyone at Whitson is.

After meeting with Rich Weber, a fellow Santa Clara Bronco, at my college career fair, I realized the firm would give me a great chance to learn more about what is involved in the profession and expose me to a real work environment. Everyone at Whitson is great; the small office atmosphere made me feel right at home. What I like most about the office is the personal and professional approach to the work environment. It was also great to see projects that better the community I grew up in.

When I first arrived at Whitson Engineers, I knew almost nothing about how a civil engineering firm works or even what they did. But every day, I learned something new, whether it was learning about a tool in AutoCad, performing a topographic survey, or just listening to people talk about projects on the phone. Receiving such hands-on experience and guidance really accelerated my learning and motivated me to keep pushing the limits so I can excel in the future.
