Tesslyn began her first internship in the summer of 2016, right after her freshman year at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Before she became an intern, she met Katie Lee (link to her page) and Chuck Pugh (link to his page) at the Civil and Environmental Engineering Career Fair at Cal Poly. Their discussion of the company’s various projects, tight-knit group of employees, and summer softball team had Tesslyn hooked. This was a company she definitely wanted to be a part of.
Throughout the summer, Tesslyn became very familiar with AutoCAD and took part in the beginning stages of projects and the completion of others.
“Each person had a project that I could learn from and help with. They ranged from site planning and design, to storm water analysis and hydrology, to being outside and surveying.”
She enjoyed working with civil engineers and surveyors and benefitted from interacting with both types of professionals.
“I went out with the crew and performed a topographic survey on a lot in the Santa Lucia Preserve. I then used the points I collected to create a surface on AutoCAD, which will then be used by engineers as a base map for the design of a residence, building, road, or driveway.”
This internship reinforced Tesslyn’s decision to become a civil engineer and she is excited for what the future holds.
“I loved working at Whitson Engineers, and I feel very grateful to have been an intern here this summer working and playing softball with a wonderful and welcoming group of people.”
